This private residence was to be situated at Whangarei Heads on a promontory on the northern side of Whangarei Harbour.
The proposed site was located at the bottom of a long driveway on a step section adjoining the beach, well secluded from the road. The existing house, which currently occupies the site, was to be demolished to make way for the new building platforms.
The clients brief required a house for their family with a separate guest residence and plenty of room for garaging vehicles and boats. The design included an independent four-car garage behind the main house. Also provided above the garage was a games room, kitchenette, en suite and guest bedroom with habour views overlooking the house.
A purpose built boat garage was proposed inside the main house within close proximity to the properties own private boat ramp. The house was accessed from the upper terrace (garage ground level) via a footbridge onto the first floor level. This level included a gallery space, study, bathrooms, 3 bedrooms and an en suite.
A generous concrete staircase would then lead you down from the entry area into the impressive double height living space. This included a large open fire and open plan kitchen. Large stack sliders were proposed on the ocean side of the kitchen and living areas. This allowed the entire entertaining space to be opened during summer, dissolving the boundary between the interior and exterior environment.
The overall concept was based on "honest" architecture - simple, crisp, clean lines which expressed the homes materiality. The buildings deep recesses to the windows accentuate the homes solid construction giving it a permanent presence within the step backdrop of mature native bush.
