The New Opua Maritime Building is located on the Opua Wharf in the Bay of Islands. Opua is the primary customs port of entry for off shore cruisers and a popular summer destination for many New Zealanders.
The new building which provides much needed office and retail space for maritime activities such as boat hire and chandlery.
The recently opened building is constructed over the existing Opua wharf in place of a fish processing factory which was removed to make way the new building. The existing wharf was demolished in part and the new building was constructed on its own piles and slab independent of the wharf structure.
The building is designed to reflect the style of the working buildings of Opua (fishing industry) as opposed to the Historic nature of Russell.
