Whangarei's Town Basin is located on the Hatea River and forms part of the marina, which is close to the city's CBD. The Town Basin has always played a significant part within Whangarei being central to shipping and supplies for the district during early European settlement.

In the mid 1990's Whangarei District Council commenced the redevelopment of the Town Basin into a retail, restaurant and arts precinct. The design of the now iconic colonial style buildings was inspired by Cafler and Reyburn House, the home of Whangarei's early settlers who built their majestic homes near what is now the Town Basin retail area.

The basin has become an attractive city icon beside the river, popular with both locals, international sailors and tourists alike.

Butt Design Group worked in conjunction with Whangarei District Council and other industry professionals in the redevelopment of Cameron Street Mall and general streetscape to the CBD. Butt Design Group was responsible for overseeing the documentation and contract administration as well as a design consultant for this project.

Butt Design Group was appointed as the design consultants for the external refurbishment of the historic town hall. This included the hard landscaping with the addition of accessible ramps, external paving and repainting the existing building.

Completed by Ian Butt under Butt Design Group.
