WHANGAREI TOWN BASIN
Whangarei's Town Basin is located on the Hatea River and forms part of the marina, which is close to the city's CBD. The Town Basin has always played a significant part within Whangarei being central to shipping and supplies for the district during early European settlement.
In the mid 1990's Whangarei District Council commenced the redevelopment of the Town Basin into a retail, restaurant and arts precinct. The design of the now iconic colonial style buildings was inspired by Cafler and Reyburn House, the home of Whangarei's early settlers who built their majestic homes near what is now the Town Basin retail area.
The basin has become an attractive city icon beside the river, popular with both locals, international sailors and tourists alike.
