This project was transformed from a modest 1970’s house to a coastal balinese inspired home. The client travelled extensively to Bali and wanted to replicate this style of living in the beautiful coastal area of Tutukaka.
The main feature of this house is notably the outdoor room. This extension was designed to provide sheltered outdoor living space where interior and exterior distinctions are blurred. The ‘transparent’ nature of the space is achieved through louvred screens to the external envelope which filter sunlight yet allow for breeze to pass through.
The house underwent extensive modifications to provide for the variety of climatic conditions experienced on the coast from cold and windy to hot and humid. The considerable use of hardwood, cedar, birch plywood and other local timbers create a dialogue between local context and Indonesian design influences. Sub tropical landscaping with ‘floating’ decks and boardwalks create a connection between the new and old.
